The fifth annual Merry Charity holiday fundraising party Thursday at the Casa Marina benefited eight area nonprofits.

Started in 2007 by The Law Office of Maggie Jo Hilliard, Merry Charity was created to provide young professionals with an opportunity to learn about area nonprofits.

“I wanted to create a venue for those young professionals who want to volunteer, but aren’t too familiar with the organizations in the area,” said Maggie Jo Hilliard, event founder.

This year’s event was attended by about 250 guests and raised more than $12,000 to benefit First Coast No More Homeless Pets, Fourth Circuit Guardian ad Litem, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, Jacksonville Urban League, JASMYN, Save Africa Global, St. Johns Riverkeeper and the Sulzbacher Center.

Guests could make donations directly to the organizations or visit the event website and buy items on the organizations’ wish lists. Each $25 donated earned guests a raffle ticket for prizes given away at the event
