For friendly competition, look no further than The Jacksonville Bar Association Sports League, which offers a way to compete, network and get a workout all at the same time.
Picking up on the success of last year, the 2010-2011 sports league started off with The JBA’s second season of kickball. While the weather has not always been warm, the competition has been heated, especially as playoff berths are on the line.
We started off the season with six teams, which unfortunately dropped down to five.
We just completed our first round of the playoffs. The top two teams, Team TSD Bombers and Scared Kickless (Heekin, Malin, Wenzel - “HMW”) had this week off. Due to the odd number of teams, Team Infidelity (Fidelity) also got an automatic bid into the semifinals. After a hard fought battle in the cold, Team BallStars beat Slow Your Roll with a score of 4-0.
The semifinals are Jan. 18 and we look forward to crowning a champion Jan. 25. Luckily, this year we have gone through the season without anyone suffering a season-ending injury.
If you were not fortunate enough to play in the kickball league, The JBA will start its own version of “March Madness” when the basketball season tips off in late February.
Once again the team of Heekin, Malin, Wenzel (the team known as “HMW”) will look to defend its streak of five championships against an onslaught of contenders.
This season looks to be one of the best yet as we hope to expand the number of teams and turn up the competition. We are open to suggestions as to the format, whether it is 4-on-4 or 5-on-5, so let us know your thoughts. Games will likely be played on Tuesday evenings. The more the merrier. You don’t need to be Kobe Bryant to come out and have a great time playing. We encourage everyone to come on out and have fun, leaving the law behind for a few hours.
Following the basketball season, The JBA sports schedule is as follows:
Flag football will start around the first week of May and continue into late June.
Softball will start around the middle of July and go through August.
We are going to try to move the kickball season up a bit and start in early to mid-October and go through November.
Lastly, the bowling league will be in December and January.
Please keep in mind these dates are tentative and subject to change. Sometimes there are issues with fields that we just can’t avoid.
If you have any questions or concerns about the upcoming JBA Sports League, you can contact me at [email protected] or Tricia Rado at [email protected].
Please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to participate in the basketball league. Rosters must be submitted no later than Feb. 11.
If you are submitting a roster, please include your team name, your team captain and your team captain’s contact information. If you don’t have a team of your own and would like to be placed on one, just let us know.
Remember, this is your JBA Sports League and we need you and your firm’s participation for this to be another successful year. The more people who come out to play, the better the league will be. So, sign up, lace up your sneakers and head out for some basketball! We look forward to seeing you on the court!
