Southlight Gallery and the St. Johns Riverkeeper are joining forces for the benefit of Downtown’s central waterway.

Tonight, the gallery is presenting “Bluegrass and Barrels,” an auction with live music by Grandpa’s Cough Medicine and beer and appetizers donated by Sweetwater Brewing Co., Chew and Matthews.

Four artists represented at Southlight — Allison Watson, Jim Draper, Paul Ladnier and Michael Dunlap — have donated work for the auction to benefit the St. Johns Riverkeeper’s efforts to preserve one of North Florida’s most valuable natural resources. Fifteen one-of-a-kind, river-friendly rain barrels also will be on the block.

Kelly Savage, community outreach coordinator for the St. Johns Riverkeeper, said the rain barrel project started three months ago as a way to educate people about simple actions they could take around their homes to preserve the health of the river.

“We thought partnering with Southlight Gallery would be a great way to end the campaign. We wanted to have the event close to the river, so Downtown was the perfect location,” she said.

“Bluegrass and Barrels” is from 5-9 p.m. this evening. The silent auction will begin at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
