• City Council President-elect Stephen Joost has heard many mispronunciations of his last name. For the record, it rhymes with “toast,” so think of “joast.” It’s not “juiced” or “yoast,” which are frequent mispronunciations. Joost said that the “rhymes with toast” saying started in first grade. Or, as his council assistant, Celeste Hicks, says, it could also be “Joost with the most.”
• Southwest Airlines began new daily nonstop service Sunday between Jacksonville International Airport and Denver International Airport. The one daily nonstop flight departs Jacksonville at 7 a.m. Sunday through Friday and the return flight leaves Denver at 5:55 p.m. The Saturday flight leaves Jacksonville at 11:55 a.m. and the return flight leaves Denver at 6 p.m.
• Jacksonville University appointed Marcel Dulay as coordinator of Campus Sustainability. The Jessie Ball duPont Fund partnered with JU to provide support to further JU’s and the duPont Fund’s efforts in sustainability. Dulay has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master’s of science in environmental engineering from UT at Austin, where he is completing his doctorate in public policy.
• Britney Spears will perform at the Arena next month and tickets are available starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. The concert is 7 p.m. July 23. Tickets are $28.50 to $349, plus service charges. • Community Connections will open a time capsule at noon Thursday at its Florence N. Davis Center at 325 E. Duval St. The flagship structure was built in 1950, with a time capsule buried behind the front brick wall. The opening kicks off the Community Connections centennial celebration. The organization was founded in 1911 as the Young Women’s Christian Association of Jacksonville and renamed Community Connections in 2000. The 100th anniversary is being celebrated through the 100 Faces and 100 Wishes projects and the Tribute One Hundred, planned Oct. 20 at the Omni Downtown. Community Connections is a nonprofit that provides assistance and housing for the homeless and offers support services to women, children and families.
