One opening was filled while another was opened after Gov. Rick Scott made an appointment to the Fourth Judicial Circuit bench Monday.
Duval County Judge Kevin Blazs, 51, was chosen by Scott from a list of six candidates compiled by the circuit’s Judicial Nominating Commission, who will again start the selection process at the governor’s request to fill the seat being vacated by Blazs in County Court.
“I’m humbled by the offer to serve in this capacity,” said Blazs. “It’s a very serious job and I am honored to be asked to do it.”
Blazs will fill the vacancy created by the death of Judge Jefferson W. Morrow. As a sitting judge, Blazs will defer to the needs of the circuit and county courts to set the time line for his transfer to the circuit bench.
“I want to make sure all of my cases are taken care of in my last cycle,” said Blazs.
“I don’t want to delay anyone’s access to a speedy trial or leave anything hanging for a new judge,” he said.
Scott said he was impressed with both Blazs’ experience and desire to pursue further education.
“Throughout his impressive 24-year legal career, Judge Blazs has defended, prosecuted and presided over both criminal and civil cases, providing him with a vast knowledge of the law and procedure,” said Scott.
“Equally impressive is the fact that Judge Blazs has continued to pursue advanced education during his time as a lawyer and judge — endeavors that are reflected in the wisdom of his rulings. I am confident that he will continue his record of judicial restraint and will evaluate every case that comes before him with integrity and objectivity,” he said.
Blazs has served on the Duval County Court since 2006. Previously, he practiced with Gobelman, Love, Gavin, Blazs & Wasilenko from 1990-2006.
He was trial counsel for the U.S. Army Reserve from 1992- 2001, a law professor at universities in China from 1989-90 and an assistant state attorney with the State Attorney’s Office from 1987-89.
