Instead of cases and motions, it was family and hobbies discussed Wednesday among members of The Jacksonville Bar Association Young Lawyer Section and judges.

“You don’t always get an opportunity to interact with the judges,” said Michelle Bedoya Barnett, who organized the breakfast hosted by the YLS.

“Especially for young lawyers, it’s important to come out and introduce yourself,” she said.

Bedoya Barnett said events like the breakfast are an especially valuable opportunity for young attorneys at smaller firms to become acquainted in an informal atmosphere.

More than 30 YLS members and about 10 judges made appearances during the hourlong event at the Duval County Courthouse.

“These are the people you’re going to practice with for the next 30 years,” said Elizabeth Howard of such social events that bring young lawyers together.

Circuit Judge Jim Daniel was one of the judges who attended and will see many of the young attorneys in his career. “I just enjoy getting to know them,” he said.
