Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (right) with Holly Petraeus, director of the Office of Service Member Affairs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, toured the region’s naval bases Wednesday to determine the financial challenges faced by sailors and their families. “The biggest issue we’ve found is the depressed state of the housing market,” said Petraeus, who is the wife of retired Army Gen. David Petraeus. “When someone gets the orders to move, there is no good answer on what they will do with that house.” Her office is working to provide service members with easier access to programs that can assist them with their housing situation. Both Atwater and Bondi have been warning service men and women about payday loans and check-cashing businesses. “If military personnel receive advertisements asking them if ‘they need cash fast’ to get them through financial struggles, it’s usually too good to be true,” said Bondi.
