When the Landing opened 25 years ago, the concept was to have a Downtown riverfront shopping center that offered consumers brands and products they couldn’t find anywhere else in the area.

That tradition continues a quarter-century later with plenty of entrepreneurs on the list of retailers, many offering items made by hand.

The stores will all be open today, the biggest holiday shopping day of the year that has become known as “Black Friday.”

Most of the stores are extending their hours to accommodate visitors who will be attending this evening’s lighting of Jacksonville’s Christmas tree.

Another full day of holiday shopping promotion at the Landing is scheduled Dec. 10.

Merchants will be decorating their stores, restaurants will be offering samples of their cuisine and Santa Claus will be having his picture taken with shoppers.

There will be a register-to-win contest with prizes at each store and a grand-prize drawing for a $500 Landing shopping spree.

It’s also the day for the 17th annual “Tuba Christmas” concert in the courtyard, said Michael Chambliss, marketing director.
