One of the good aspects about having a sidewalk lunch business Downtown is that if you decide to move to a new location, it’s easy.
That’s what happened to Brad and Mayra Valentine, owners and operators of Popka’s Hot Dogs.
The couple has been setting up their curbside grill in Hemming Plaza since January, taking advantage of the shade trees in the southwest corner near Monroe and Hogan streets.
Recently, one of their regular customers told them a prime location a few blocks south along Hogan Street might be available, so the couple went into action and secured the spot at Sister Cities Plaza near the Landing and the Times-Union Center.
“Hemming Plaza was really good for us. It got us into the heart of Downtown and allowed us to build a customer base for our gourmet take on an American classic, but now we’re part of the skyline – we’re part of the postcard,” said Brad Valentine.
Popka’s is open for lunch Monday-Friday at Hogan and Water streets. Valentine said the grill will continue to be part of First Wednesday Art Walk at Hemming Plaza.
