In the race to replace State Sen. Tony Hill, Audrey Gibson won Tuesday’s special Democratic primary election with more than 60 percent of the vote.

Gibson, a former state representative, defeated three others on the ballot, including former State Rep. Terry Fields.

She will move on to the Oct. 18 general election to face write-in candidate Andrea Austin.

The $1 million special election was triggered when Hill resigned effective Oct. 1 to take a position on Mayor Alvin Brown’s staff.

The State Senate District 1 primary had 11,059 voters, of which 6,780 voted Gibson. Turnout was 9.7 percent.
