The achievement of passing the Florida Bar exam and being sworn in as a new attorney was celebrated Wednesday with a happy hour hosted by The Jacksonville Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section at Mark’s Downtown.
The Young Lawyers Section consists of area young lawyers who are 35 years old or younger or who have been practicing less than five years.
It is dedicated to providing programs and projects designed to benefit young lawyers, all members of the Bar and the Jacksonville community.
President-elect Michael Orr, with Dawson Orr, spoke to the new lawyers at the swearing-in ceremony about the importance of mentorship.
“A lot of people come into the practice of law and they are lucky enough to be with a firm where they have a mentor. There are a number of people putting up their own shingle or going into practice with a few colleagues and starting up a firm,” said Orr.
“I can tell you that I like to think that I know everything and I like to think I can research anything and know it very quickly, but mentorship is extremely important,” said Orr.
“My partner has been practicing, as of about two weeks ago, for 60 years. He knows more than I will ever forget and he is a very special person who I try to talk to every day about something I’m working on,” he said.
Applications for The Jacksonville Bar Association’s mentorship program are available at www.jaxbar.org.
The YLS is led by its board of governors: President Elizabeth Howard, President-elect Michael Orr, Secretary Michelle Bedoya Barnett, Fraz Ahmed, Christian George, Patrick Kilbane, Renee Maxey, Eric Roberson and Lindsay Tygart.
