Mayor Alvin Brown continued to seek support Thursday for his economic development reform legislation, visiting more than 40 members of the JAX Chamber. He was joined by Jerry Mallot, JAXUSA Partnership president, and Don Shea, Jacksonville Civic Council executive director, to explain details of the legislation that would speed up approval of economic development deals, transition the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission into a new Office of Economic Development and create a Downtown Investment Authority. The legislation is under review by City Council. When asked “how long we should give” Council to pass the legislation, attention turned to Council member Don Redman, who represents parts of Downtown and was in attendance. Redman said some Council members do not understand the need for the legislation and some “will beat it to death,” but said that if Brown and others continue to advocate, “it could go pretty fast.” The earliest Council could approve the reform is April 24.
