The Jacksonville Bar Association began its annual Law Day celebration a little early this year to take advantage of a historic opportunity.

The JBA Law Day Luncheon was held April 11 to accommodate the travel schedule of American Bar Association President William Robinson, who represents the profession at events around the world for the ABA.

The early date allowed The JBA to host both Robinson and The Florida Bar President Scott Hawkins, which was the first time The JBA Law Day celebration was attended by Bar leaders from the national, state and local levels.

The schedule also allowed The JBA to fill the weeks leading up to the national Law Day, May 1, with events celebrating the practice of law.

The theme for Law Day 2012 is “No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom” and Robinson gave his interpretation of that message at the Law Day luncheon.

“It simply means that our courts need sustainable funding. It is fundamental to the freedoms we enjoy in this state and in this country,” said Robinson.

Following the event, Mayor Alvin Brown signed a proclamation declaring May 1 as Law Day in Jacksonville. The proclamation signing was attended by Bar and Law Day Committee leaders.
