Attorney Tatiana Salvador was among the first to sign a petition Wednesday to place a straw referendum on the fall 2014 general election ballot in Duval County in support of the Jacksonville Public Library system. An affidavit was filed with the Supervisor of Elections Office pursuant to the City charter that began a drive to collect 26,000 signatures of registered voters to place the referendum on the ballot. The straw ballot will gauge public support of a special ad valorem taxing district that would provide for an independent library system that would not depend on the City’s general fund for support. “We want to give the citizens of the community a choice,” said Salvador, a member of the petitioners’ committee that filed the affidavit.
