Grymes beats Barrett for School Board District 1

In one of the primary’s tighter races, former Duval County School Board member Cheryl Grimes defeated incumbent Martha Barrett by fewer than 1,600 votes unofficially to win the seat for District 1. Grymes served during the on the board for eight years during the 1990s. Barrett served from 2000-2008 and won a special election in 2009 to continue her service. The unofficial count, with all precincts reporting, resulted in Grimes gaining 7,724 votes against Barrett’s 6,140, good for a 55.7 percent to 44.3 percent tally, respectively.
