U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, a Democrat, and Connie Mack, a Republican, soundly defeated their primary oppositions Tuesday, setting up a Nov. 6 showdown to determine who will represent Florida in one of two seats. Nelson dominated Glenn A. Burkett at the polls, winning 78.8 percent of the more than 846,000 votes cast. Mack won his race with a more modest 58.7 percent of the more than one million votes cast, but also faced three challengers who accounted for more than 450,000 combined votes. Nelson has held the U.S. Senate seat since replacing Mack’s grandfather, Connie Mack, when he retired in 2001.
