Sheriff John Rutherford (middle) successfully made his case to roll $10.5 million of his department’s savings into fiscal 2012-13 to members of the City Council Finance Committee on Friday. After lengthy debate, the committee voted 6-1 in favor to allow the rollover, with Council member John Crscimbeni (seated, middle) opposing. The savings, Rutherford said, will allow the office to avoid laying off 114 police officers and keeping a popular drug rehabilitation facility open. Crescimbeni argued the move sets a bad precedent and other City departments that have saved will also seek to keep their savings, which are typically swept into the general fund. The full Council will vote on the item Aug. 28.
