In terms of weather, Friday was a day Visit Jacksonville would like to trap in a bottle and send around the country to drum up convention and leisure travel business.
With the temperature hovering around 70 degrees and sunny, it was a perfect day to "Picnic in the Plaza" with Downtown Vision Inc., the neighborhood's not-for-profit advocacy organization.
Each Friday in December from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., weather permitting, people who live, work or are visiting Downtown are invited to bring lunch and join the DVI staff near the stage at Hemming Plaza.
Picnic blankets and folding chairs are welcome.
Last week, more than 60 people, including some City employees who turned their regular Friday potluck lunch into an al fresco experience, took over the west end of the plaza.
After lunch, they played corn toss and Ladder Ball and flipped a Frisbee until it flew into the fountain.
"We think it's a way to get some momentum for people to use and enjoy the plaza," said DVI Director of Marketing Katherine Hardwick.
