The national touring production of the Broadway revival of "West Side Story" is onstage at the Times-Union Center this week.

The show is part of the Florida State College at Jacksonville Artist Series "Broadway in Jacksonville" 2012-13 season.

Based on William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," the story is about Tony and Maria, young lovers who persevere despite the hatred and intolerance that surrounds them.

The touring production recreates the original 1957 direction, choreography and music by Leonard Bernstein and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, who made his Broadway debut with "West Side Story."

The score features classics of American musical theater including "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "America" and "I Feel Pretty."

Evening performances are scheduled through Sunday, with matinees scheduled Saturday and Sunday.

Also on the Artist Series calendar, "A Christmas Carol" will be presented Dec. 21 for one performance at the Times-Union Center.
