A spokeswoman for Marshalls, which sells off-price clothing and home goods, confirmed Wednesday that the chain plans to open another Jacksonville store in early to mid-2013.
Carrie Garfield, the public relations supervisor for The TJX Companies Inc., said she didn’t have the address of the store. The stores each employ about 60 full-time and part-time workers, she said.
She did not comment about plans filed with the St. Johns River Water Management District by a developer that shows a Marshalls store in the University Shopping Center at University Boulevard West and St. Augustine Road.
The district issued a permit in late January to University Center CRP LLC, based in Palm Beach Gardens, for improvements to the center. The center formerly housed a Publix Super Markets store and a Stein Mart Inc. store, which moved to nearby locations.
Ronald Mariano, shown on plans as the contact for the owner and developer, did not return two telephone calls for comment.
The plans filed with the district show the 11.07-acre site with a total building area of 104,748 square feet.
They show a proposed but unidentified facility of 43,888 square feet at the former Publix and they also show an “existing Marshalls” in 27,041 square feet in the former Stein Mart store. Plans show an available space of 17,975 square feet next to the Marshalls.
Also shown are the existing CVS/pharmacy, Dollar Tree, dry cleaner and McDonald’s.
The developer also includes a proposed 116-seat restaurant along University Boulevard West.
TJX, based in Framingham, Mass., sells off-price apparel and home goods in the U.S. and worldwide. TJX, with more than 2,900 stores in the U.S., Canada and Europe, reported almost $23.2 billion in revenues in the year that ended in January.
Marshalls is part of TJX, which also owns T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods.
“We do plan to open a new Marshalls store in Jacksonville in early- to mid-2013. This is all the information I have at this time,” Garfield said in an email.
The Daily Record reported in October that the preliminary site plan for the property indicated a proposed fitness center in the space vacated by Publix.
The permit determination request, on behalf of property owner University Center CRP LLC, said the project will include demolition of about 8,600 square feet of commercial space to make way for additional parking spaces, and redevelopment of an existing parking area into the restaurant outparcel along University Boulevard.
The Marshalls website shows that it has six stores in Northeast Florida. Its six area stores are in Mandarin Corners, Highland Square, Normandy Village, Pablo Plaza in Jacksonville Beach, Ridgecrest Plaza in Orange Park and Seabridge Square in St. Augustine.
Marshalls and T.J. Maxx form The Marmaxx Group.
Marshalls, bought by TJX in 1995, operated 884 stores in the United States at the end of 2011. As of October, its stores averaged about 32,000 square feet in size.
Founded in 1976, T.J. Maxx had 983 U.S. stores at the end of 2011.The average T.J. Maxx store is about 30,000 square feet.
