University of North Florida biology student Chase Long studies the teeth of a 9-foot-long, 600-pound Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, which was found stranded Feb. 16 on Ponte Vedra Beach by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The UNF Coastal Biology Flagship Program and the commission conducted the first large marine mammal necropsy in the new UNF Biological Sciences Building. The necropsy facility allows dissection of large marine animals up to 10 feet long and 2,000 pounds. The commission, the state agency responsible for responding to and conducting necropsies on all marine mammals found in the Jacksonville area, picked up the 600-pound dolphin carcass and brought it to UNF. The necropsy provided biology students with a hands-on learning opportunity. UNF will dedicate the building at 10:30 a.m. March 30. The 116,500-square-foot, four-story center cost $39.4 million, which was paid by Public Education Capital Outlay Funds, or PECO, specifically for construction.
