Since 1979, Theatreworks Jacksonville has offered the live theater experience to North Florida students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade.

More than 2,000 elementary school students arrived Monday at The Florida Theatre Downtown to see two performances of “Ramona Quimby.”

The play is the story of a little girl whose family is facing several challenges, but with each other’s help and the help of friends, they face their challenges.

Theatreworks presents about 14 shows each year at The Florida Theatre and an additional 70 are staged in school auditoriums.

The organization also offers a free summer theater program to about 10,000 students each year, said Theatreworks Jacksonville Executive Director Rita Kent.

“When they walk into The Florida Theatre, the children are just amazed how beautiful it is. For many of the students, it’s their only chance to be exposed to arts and culture,” said Kent.

The shows are funded by a cultural services grant from the City and also by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and the Southern Arts Federation.

Corporations, foundations and individuals also contribute to the annual children’s theater program.

Kent said Theatreworks is always looking for support from the private sector.

“We look for corporate sponsors who are interested in investing in the future of our children,” she said.

The next scheduled Theatreworks performances at The Florida Theatre are 10 a.m. and noon April 9 when “Skippyjon Jones” will be live on stage in the historic venue. It’s the story of a kitten who pretends to be a bird, a llama, a whale and a Chihuahua.
