Tables and chairs were being moved Wednesday morning into a second-floor courtroom in the new Duval County Courthouse, although the building might not be ready to open Tuesday on schedule. Daily Record news partner WJXT Channel 4 reports that the fire marshal notified the City that the fire sprinklers and other safety equipment are not working correctly. “Currently, the building does not meet the fire code,” Fire Chief Marty Senterfitt said late Wednesday afternoon. “We have not been able to have a successful pass on this test.” He said that jeopardizes the Tuesday opening, “so we are quite concerned.” Court officials said they were about 60 percent moved into the new, seven-story courthouse. Senterfitt said the move could continue, but the opening depends on correcting the safety issues. The mayor’s staff said any costs incurred would be the responsibility of Turner Construction Co. However, Turner Construction Senior Project Manager Lou Fiori said Wednesday morning that the project is “hours away” from being ready to turn over to the City. David Schneider, the City’s project manager, said he expects to receive the keys to the building over the weekend.
