• Jacksonville Port Authority CEO Paul Anderson will speak to the GrayRobinson “Community Leader Forum” from 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. June 7 at The River Club.
• Former Gov. Jeb Bush told an Italian online news site that if Mitt Romney offered the vice presidential spot to him he would consider it with “great attention” but that he doesn’t think Romney will choose him, reports the News Service of Florida. In an interview that was reported in Italian — leaving open to interpretation what Bush actually said in English — the site, Linkiesta, also says the Republican Party Bush envisions would have a “culture of inclusion.” Regarding Romney, “I don’t think he will choose me,” Bush told the interviewer.
• City Council Vice President Bill Bishop and Council member Richard Clark called joint meetings of the Rules and Finance committees to discuss Mayor Alvin Brown’s proposed economic development legislation. The meetings are 5 p.m. June 6, 13, 20 and 27 in Council chambers at City Hall.
• Correction: A cutline for a photo Tuesday about the sheriffs participating in the “Shoot for Justice” event switched the names of Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith and Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler.
• City Council President Stephen Joost and Duval County School Chairwoman Betty Burney will host a joint meeting of the Council and School Board from 1-2:30 p.m. June 12 at City Hall to discuss issues that will affect growth, funding and quality of life for individuals who live and work within the city.
• The Jacksonville Aviation Authority announced that Silver Airways, operating under the United Airlines code, will begin daily scheduled service from Jacksonville International Airport to Tampa International Airport on Aug. 13. The flights are on sale at an introductory rate of $39 each way, plus taxes and service charges. There will be three daily flights from Jacksonville to Tampa, which the authority said will create one-stop connections for passengers traveling to Key West and Pensacola.
• SMG Jacksonville, the facility management company for the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, announced that the arena received a Prime Site Award of Excellence from Facilities Magazine. It is the third Prime Site Award for the arena, which also was recognized in 2011 and 2006. Facilities Magazine is a trade publication targeting professional planners of conventions and other events, booking agents and talent buyers. Readers vote for which entertainment, sport and special event venues in North America they believe best deserve the award. The arena is a 15,000-seat, multipurpose public facility that opened in 2003.
• Pollo Tropical opened its third area company-owned restaurant. It’s at the River City Marketplace.
• The Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library plans the June Book Warehouse Sale for June 1-3 and June 9 with special sales June 5 and June 7 for senior citizens and teachers. The sale is planned at its book warehouse at University Park Library, 3435 University Blvd. N. The sale will include children’s books, fiction, nonfiction, large print, as well as DVDs and CDs. • Florida’s federally insured banks and savings institutions posted a combined net income of $174 million for the quarter ending March 31, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. reported last week. The first-quarter figures were up 26.1 percent from $138 million posted for the fourth quarter of 2011 and compared to a $3 million net income loss in the first quarter of 2011. The number of FDIC-insured banks and savings and loans dropped from 243 last year to 222 during the most recently reported quarter. Nationally, FDIC-insured commercial banks and savings institutions reported an aggregate profit of $35.3 billion in the first quarter of 2012, a $6.6 billion improvement from the $28.8 billion in net income the industry reported in the first quarter of 2011.
