• The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association hosted a Halloween Happy Hour on Tuesday at River City Brewing Company. Event sponsor Robert Frankousky (left), managing principal and financial advisor of Compass Financial Group, pulls business cards of prize winners from a pumpkin.

• Attorney Lindsey Brock, partner with the firm of Rumrell & Brock, was elected port director for the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute at the group’s annual meeting Oct. 6 in Williamsburg, Va. The election places Brock on the organization’s board of directors. The institute was formed in 1968 and provides a forum for discussion of admiralty and maritime law and its practices and administration.

• Smith Hulsey & Busey has been recognized in seven top-tier rankings in the 2013 “Best Law Firms” by U.S. News & World Report. The rankings showcase more than 10,000 law firms ranked nationally or by metropolitan region and are based on surveys from clients, attorneys and law firm representatives. The firm received top-tier rankings in the Jacksonville metropolitan region in bankruptcy and creditor debtor rights and insolvency and reorganization law; commercial litigation; litigation in banking and finance; litigation in eminent domain and condemnation; medical malpractice law, defendants; real estate law; and trusts and estates law.

• McGuireWoods made the 2013 “Best Law Firms” listing in the U.S. News & World Report, making the first-tier national rankings in 10 categories. They are corporate law; employment law, management; land use and zoning law; litigation, banking and finance; litigation, environmental; litigation, regulatory enforcement; mass tort litigation and class actions, defendants; product liability litigation, defendants; public finance law; and trusts and estates law. The firm also placed in six practice areas for Jacksonville, including first-tier rankings in banking and finance law, environmental law and environment litigation.

• Akerman made the 2013 “Best Law Firms” list. In the Jacksonville metropolitan region, the firm received first-tier ranking in six practice areas. They are bankruptcy and creditor debtor rights, insolvency and reorganization law; commercial litigation; litigation, banking and finance; litigation, eminent domain and condemnation; and litigation, real estate.

• Datz & Datz Attorneys at Law announced that Lawrence Datz has become a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Datz is one of only five academy Fellows practicing in Jacksonville. Datz’s father and law partner Albert Datz is another of the five. The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers was established to provide leadership that promotes the highest degree of professionalism and excellence in family law.
