City Council member and St. Johns River Ferry Commission Chairman John Crescimbeni was given a ceremonial key to the ferry Sunday night as a sign that ferry operations return today to the City. The Jacksonville Port Authority had taken over the operation of the ferry from the City in 2007, but it announced in February that it could no longer afford to run the service at an annual loss of $600,000. Area residents and Council members launched a campaign to continue the service shortly after the announcement and will now seek funding to sustain the ferry into the future.
