The celebration leading up to the 100th anniversary of The Financial News & Daily Record officially began Tuesday at the Hyatt Downtown.

More than 100 CEOs and presidents of local not-for-profit organizations were joined by many well-known members of the philanthropic community at a lunch hosted by Daily Record Publisher Jim Bailey and his wife, Donna.

On Nov. 14, the Daily Record will have been published 27,247 consecutive weekdays without interruption, Bailey said.

“Through this century, we have always looked at the Daily Record as part of our community. Building and maintaining relationships has always been a huge part of what we do in our company. We invest our money in human capital, in nonprofit groups, in public service,” he said.

Bailey, the third generation in his family to own and operate the newspaper, has served on the boards of nonprofit organizations for more than 35 years. He said working with the organizations has been a valuable experience.

“I have learned how to use creative problem-solving for multiple tasks with limited resources – you all know about limited resources,” he said to the executives.

Bailey recognized the organizations for their contributions to all of the residents of Northeast Florida.

“Because you care, things get better in this community for a lot of people every single day. Our nonprofits provide the only services and safety nets for thousands of people who have special needs. You uplift our spirits with the arts and improve the educational experiences of our children. You give health care and comfort to the dying,” said Bailey.

“We’re here today to say ‘thank you’ for doing this,” he said.

The Baileys presented a check for $1,000 to Junior Achievement of North Florida Inc. The organization was selected by a random drawing.
