It wasn’t a conventional order for Jacksonville-based Firehouse Subs.
Yet, it was. A large one.
The chain’s Charlotte, N.C., restaurants supplied $60,000 of subs, representing 8,411 boxed lunches, to the Democratic National Convention last week.
Spokeswoman Briant Mertz said Tuesday it wasn’t the largest order the company has catered in its history, although it probably fed one of the biggest political gatherings of the year.
Mertz said the subs included turkey, ham, roast beef and chicken breast.
How did it happen?
“Firehouse Subs submitted to be a vendor through the City of Charlotte Police Department, vendors were selected and put through an application process, sampling, and then a committee made the final choice,” she said.
“Firehouse Subs is now an approved vendor with the City of Charlotte,” Mertz said.
Mertz said Firehouse supplied the subs Sept. 1-7, covering the convention and days on both sides.
She said the Charlotte restaurants are franchise-owned and the catering was provided out of one restaurant with the help of other Charlotte franchisees.
The largest single order of the convention was 2,800 subs.
“Firehouse Subs received many compliments and everyone loved the food,” she said.
Firehouse Corporate Communications Director Cecily Sorensen said there was no way to know whether President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, former President Bill Clinton, first lady Michelle Obama or any of the other political leaders and keynote speakers were served Firehouse Subs during the convention.
Firehouse Subs was founded in 1994 in Jacksonville by firefighter brothers Chris and Robin Sorensen. Its website says the chain has more than 525 company-owned and franchised Firehouse Subs in 32 states and Puerto Rico.
