As our community continues to face a tight economy and shrinking budgets, the Daily Record has established this feature that each week reports the efforts of local nonprofit organizations and the individuals and businesses that support them.

Bailey Publishing & Communications invites all members of the local nonprofit community to email news, announcements and success stories to [email protected] or to [email protected].

We also encourage our readers to become more aware of the needs of these worthy organizations as they continue to provide valuable services with reduced resources.

Massage Envy and the Arthritis Foundation will host “Healing Hands for Arthritis,” a one-day event to build awareness and raise funds to fight arthritis. On Wednesday, Massage Envy Jacksonville will donate $10 for every one-hour massage or facial to the Arthritis Foundation. Last year, this nationwide event raised nearly $500,000.

To make an appointment, contact one of six Jacksonville locations at (904) 821-3689. Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cyclists aim to raise $1 million for MS

Nearly 2,000 cyclists will ride 150 miles from St. Augustine to Daytona Beach and back Sept. 29-30 in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, North Florida Chapter’s annual fundraiser, “Bike MS: PGA TOUR Cycle to the Shore.”

Cyclists will raise more than $1 million locally for multiple sclerosis research, programs and services.

The event will be the 26th annual ride for the North Florida Chapter. In 2011, the chapter raised $1.3 million from the event. In the past 25 years, the event has raised more than $13 million locally.

Beginning at 6 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Northeast Florida Regional Airport, cyclists will begin a more than 80-mile ride to the Daytona Beach Hilton, where they will cross the finish line (and halfway point) on the Daytona Beach boardwalk. The next morning, participants will ride more than 80 miles back to the airport.

More than 100 cycling teams will participate, including corporate teams from Mayo Clinic, the PGA Tour, CSX and Florida Blue. Local bicycle shops such as City Cycle, About Bicycles, Bicycles Etc. and Open Road Bicycles have offered weekly training rides for months preceding the ride for rookie and veteran cyclists.

The Bike MS route includes frequent rest stops, entertainment, safety support and meals.

Rider and volunteer registration is open through Monday.

For more information, or to participate or volunteer, visit bikefln.nationalmssociety.org, call (904) 332-6810 or email [email protected].
