A majority of Daily Record readers say armed personnel should be posted in schools.

The Daily Record's Weekly Poll asked the question Dec. 31: "Should armed personnel be posted in schools?"

Of readers responding, 59 percent said yes and 41 percent said no.

The question followed the Dec. 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

The Daily Record asked 13 Weekly Poll questions during the first quarter of 2013, from January through March. Results are not scientific, but they reflect the views of Daily Record readers who respond to the surveys.

Several other questions concerned topics that continue to make headlines.

Asked should gay marriage be legalizedin Florida, the responses were close, with 51 percent of those responding saying no and 49 percent saying yes.

In another topic of national interest, Daily Record readers responding to the question whether the U.S. Postal Service should stop Saturday mail delivery were overwhelming in favor of ending the practice.

Almost 8 in 10 respondents, or 78 percent, said Saturday mail delivery should be stopped, while 22 percent said it should not.

Meanwhile, federal income taxes are due Monday. We asked Jan. 28, "Will you receive a tax refund this year?"

It was close — 51 percent said yes and 49 percent said no.

There was less of a split in rushing to file those tax returns. We asked the week of March 18, "Have you filed your taxes yet?"

In response, 43 percent said yes and the majority, 57 percent, said no.

Tax money often is involved in government financial incentives to recruit businesses who pledge to create jobs and make capital investments, and a slim majority of readers agree with public financial incentives for business.

The Feb. 4 question was, "Do you agree with public financial incentives for business?"

Of those responding, 52 percent said yes and 48 percent said no.

Jobs and the workplace were the subjects of several questions during the first quarter.

In summary, the majority of Daily Record readers who responded have never been furloughed, do not plan on changing jobs this year, commute 10-20 miles (one way) to work each day and, given the option, would telecommute.

The widest margin of response came when asked, "Have you ever been furloughed at work?"

A large majority, at 82 percent, said no, while 18 percent said yes.

Another wide majority, 71 percent, do not plan on changing jobs this year, while 29 percent do.

Asked about the distance of their one-way commute, an equal percentage of those responding — 31 percent — said they travel less than 10 miles or more than 20 miles each day, while 38 percent said they commute 10-20 miles.

The commute might be a factor in the response from readers who said, given the option, they would telecommute (59 percent) rather than come to the office (41 percent).

Those who drive to work might be traveling through the intersections where red-light cameras have been installed. But the majority of respondents, 56 percent, said the cameras will not improve road safety, while 44 percent said they will.

On the topic of travel, asked if they own a bicycle, about two-thirds, or 67 percent, of readers said they do, while a third said they do not.

The same percentage split came when asked, "Do you shop organic?"

Two-thirds, or 67 percent, said they don't while a third, or 33 percent, said they do.

This week's poll question is, "I watch TV using: Cable, Satellite, Other."
