Mission: To fulfill the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.
Serving Jacksonville: Dreams Come True was founded in 1984 and serves as Jacksonville's only locally based nonprofit fulfilling the dreams of our community's children with life-threatening illnesses.
Those served: We serve all children who either live or are treated for their illness in the Jacksonville area. Since our founding, we have fulfilled the dreams of more than 3,000 children and project that we will provide dreams to more than 165 children during the current year.
Biggest challenge: Funding. In our history, Dreams Come True has never turned away an eligible child, and because of the sensitive nature of our work, there can be no waiting list. This promise is even more challenging to keep in tough economic times, so maintaining our loyal supporters and identifying new donors is extremely important.
Biggest satisfaction: The smiles (and tears of happiness, too) that I see on the faces of our dreamers and their family members when they are presented with the details of their upcoming dream experience. The ability to bring joy into their lives in the midst of a very dark time brings a sense of satisfaction that is beyond measure.
Hometown: Jacksonville. Yes, I'm a native!
First experience with community service: With my mother, as a very young child, meeting the needs of individuals and families in my church.
Your job before Dreams Come True: 18 years at the American Diabetes Association.
