The unusually warm weather this winter has made Downtown's "Great Streets" hanging flower baskets flourish.
Downtown Vision Inc. spokeswoman Katherine Hardwick said some of the baskets were replanted in December with cold-tolerant blooming plants, but with temperatures above average through this week, many of the summer plants in the baskets have had time to grow.
Each basket is customized with plants that thrive in sunny or shady conditions, based on the basket's location, she said.
"It's a bit of a learning curve. We haven't had to deal much with freezes this year," Hardwick said.
The warm weather also may lead to DVI restarting the "Picnic in the Plaza" Friday lunch events earlier than originally planned. Hardwick said it was returning to the schedule in March, but might be moved up a few weeks if the mild temperatures continues.
