Retired Judicial Assistant Sara Brooks always sought more time to spend with her grandson and, after 32 years as judicial assistant in the 4th Circuit, she plans to do so.

Brooks moved from Richmond, Va., to Jacksonville to be closer to her grandson, Billy, in 1980. Along with time with her grandson, she developed a career as a judicial assistant that has spanned more than three decades with three judges.

"I think Chief Judge Moran and Judge Haddock are the only people with more time at the courthouse than me right now," said Brooks during her retirement ceremony Wednesday in Moran's chambers.

Brooks began her career with the court as a judicial assistant for Duval County Judge Edward Westberry from 1981-86. She then worked with Circuit Judge William Parsons from 1986-99. Parsons was assigned to the Nassau County Courthouse for five years during that time.

"I drove from Jacksonville to Fernandina for five years and made it to the courthouse before 6 a.m.," said Brooks.

She finished her career working with Duval County Judge Eleni Derke, who she joined in 1999.

"Thank you for taking such good care of me and keeping me out of trouble," said Derke.

Moran was not able to attend the reception, but said he appreciated Brooks for her years of service.

"She's well thought of by judges and assistants, and has been a mentor to the new people we hire. She has been extraordinarily collegial with everybody around here. She will be missed," said Moran.

Brooks' plans for retirement include more time with her grandson, Billy, an owner of Aldridge & Sons Plumbing, where Brooks will work.

"I have always loved (the courthouse). (My career) is one thing I'm really proud of," said Brooks.
