• The St. Johns Riverkeeper is hosting a forum to discuss potential impacts of the proposed Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Project at 6 p.m. July 23 at the Wyndham Jacksonville Riverwalk. A panel is scheduled to provide an overview of the proposed dredging and its impacts as well as shortcomings of a recently released study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that analyzed environmental impacts and economic costs and benefits. The Corps is studying the possibility of dredging the river from 40 feet to 47 feet. The public has until July 31 to submit comments to the Corps about the project. Bridge of Northeast Florida names leadership
The Bridge of Northeast Florida has announced a new leadership structure for the organization after the retirement of Davy Parrish earlier this year. Donna Arias, who has worked with the organization for 18 years, will become the president and CEO, overseeing all program directors. New to the organization is Shariffa Spicer, who will serve as vice president of external affairs and oversee all public-related functions of the organization, such as fundraising, community outreach, marketing and public and private partnerships. Poetry Slam this Saturday
Area teens ages 11-18 will hit the stage at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Main Library to show their poetic skills and compete for prizes as part of the Jax Youth Poetry Slam. The spoken word "open mic" event will be hosted by Tonya Smart, Jax Youth Poetry Slam Inc. founder. The organization promotes literacy, public awareness and critical thinking for at-risk youth. Performances will be rated on audience participation and an evaluation of judges, with prizes awarded to first-, second- and third-place finishers. The event is free and open to the public. 1st DCA Nominating Commission applications sought
Applications are being sought for an attorney vacancy on the 1st District Court of Appeal Nominating Commission. By way of a July 1 letter, Gov. Rick Scott rejected a slate of nominees the commission submitted. The Florida Bar will submit a list of three nominees to Scott for appointment for a term that begins immediately and ends June 2016. Applicants must be engaged in the practice of law and a resident of the territorial jurisdiction, which includes Duval and Nassau counties and stretches west to the Panhandle. Beaches Cleanup nets 5,400 pounds of trash
The July 5 Beaches Cleanup, an annual post-Independence Day event, was attended by 185 volunteers who collected 270 bags of trash totaling 5,400 pounds. Attendees were provided bags and gloves to collect litter and debris along the shoreline at three locations: Atlantic Boulevard at the ocean, Beach Boulevard at the ocean and 16th Avenue South in Jacksonville Beach at the ocean.
ElderSource names new board members
Eldersource announced six members to the organization's board of directors: and Friends of Eldersource board of directors. Dan Button, Integrated Family Services LLC founder; Florida Gateway College program developer; Don Roberts, Seaside National Bank and Trust North Region president; and Larry Williams, president of Larry Williams Consulting Inc., were named to the board of directors. Jill Leslie, Mothers Against Drunk Driving executive director, and Eve Ross, Home Sweet Accessible Home owner, were named to the Friends board of directors. Eldersource is a state-designated Area Agency on Aging and aging and disability resource center that empowers elders and their caregivers to help age with dignity and independence.
