More than 30 members of the judiciary within the 4th Judicial Circuit gathered Thursday to honor an old friend and courthouse colleague. Leighton Boyette, a member of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, has served as a bailiff since December 1962. Chief Judge Don Moran and others spent part of their lunch hour telling stories and giving their well-wishes to Boyette when he retires Aug. 15. Boyette said he has served through two police commissioners, four sheriffs and nine mayors, but will be spending his retirement on hobbies such as his motorcycles and catching up on yard work. "It means a lot to me and feels pretty good," he said, when asked about the recognition. He said a couple of memories come to mind when reflecting on his career: helping to stop a much-publicized courtroom brawl and escorting former Alabama Gov. George Wallace to town when the politician came to Jacksonville during his presidential campaign.
