“Activating Downtown” is a phrase often heard, but a local entrepreneur has taken the phrase describing increased activity to heart with “Fitness in the Plaza.”
Scheduled 11 a.m.-1 p.m. each Friday, the weekly gathering of fitness-minded Downtown workers, residents and visitors was created by Donteacia Seymore.
She approached the City’s Office of Special Events last spring with the idea to host fitness and well-being classes in Downtown’s “central park” at the front door of City Hall.
“I wanted to get healthy and I learned it’s easier to do with a support system. I wanted to be outside and I wanted to do something for Downtown,” said Seymore.
Fitness in the Plaza is sponsored by St. Vincent’s HealthCare, Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym and My Gym Children’s Fitness Center.
Seymore said the second Friday of each month is “KidCentric Friday” and features fitness activities geared for children as well as adults.
In the event of rain, the group moves just across Laura Street to either the Museum of Contemporary Art or the Main Library, she said.
Classes are free of charge and everyone is invited to participate, Seymore said.
