One of the largest outdoor art projects in the history of Downtown is underway along East Adams Street on the northeast and northwest corners of the Yates Building parking garage.

The two 50-foot tall panels are part of the City's Art in Public Places program. It was created in 1997 and designates .0075 percent of the budget of all municipal capital construction projects for the commissioning of public art.

The budget for the two murals is $35,000, said Christie Hole-chek, Art in Public Places coordinator for the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, which administers the program.

Holechek said the site for the murals was chosen because East Adams Street is the gateway to Downtown's "Spark District," the central area of the urban core selected as the focus of a public art grant program.

The northeast corner mural is being painted by two St. Augustine-based artists, Felici Asteinza and Joey Fillastre. They are members of the Milagros Art Collective. The new murals will become part of their portfolio of more than 20 large-scale urban paintings.

Artist Sean Mahan from Neptune Beach is painting the northwest mural. He said he is scheduled to have the panels complete by June 29.

"I'm sure Sean will finish his mural on time because he has another gig in Los Angeles in July," said Holechek.

A dedication ceremony hosted by Mayor Alvin Brown, City Council members and the Cultural Council is being planned, possibly in conjunction with the Aug. 7 First Wednesday Art Walk, she said.
