Home builder PulteGroup is moving its headquarters next year to Atlanta from Michigan.

President and CEO Richard Dugas Jr. said more of Pulte’s business is happening outside of Michigan, including the Jacksonville area.

“The company has reached a point where we must pursue a strategy that better fits with the long-term growth trends for our company and industry,” Dugas said in a written statement. “This relocation will bring us closer to our customers and a larger portion of our investment portfolio. ... This was not an easy decision, but I am confident that it is the right choice, at the right time, for the ongoing success of the organization.”

In 2000, about 72 percent of its business investments were located outside of Michigan and related Midwest market. Last year, investments outside of those was 92 percent of its business.

Founded in metro Detroit in 1950, PulteGroup is one of the country’s largest home builders with about 3,400 employees and operations in nearly 60 metropolitan area markets in 28 states.
