Corsets and tutus again will be on the rack for sale Downtown when the Frugal Diva moves into the former Body Central retail space at the Landing.

The store debuted Downtown in May 2012 when Subculture, based in Five Points, opened a second location at the Landing.

In January, much of the merchandise was sent back to Riverside, the store was reconfigured to specialize in affordable fashion jewelry and renamed Frugal Diva.

When Body Central moved out in February, Landing General Manager Janice Lowe said she was sure the 3,316-square-foot space would not be empty for long since it's one of the prime locations in the riverfront mall.

This week, the space is receiving a facelift in preparation for a larger Frugal Diva and Subculture Boutique.

After more than 26 years as Body Shop — one of the Landing's original tenants — and then Body Central, the space was due for some work, said Carolyn Hand, Frugal Diva and Subculture manager.

"The store hasn't been painted since it opened. It needs some loving care," she said.

Hand said when the space opens for business, in addition to corsets and fashion jewelry, she's adding women's business attire and accessories. A plus-size line and casual clothing also are in the plans.

She said there's a market for a clothing store for customers who work Downtown and for visitors.

"We're constantly being asked by women who are Downtown, especially for conventions, where they can find a clothing store and you won't find anything above a size 12 or 14," Hand said.

She said after a fresh coat of paint and minor cosmetic repairs, store fixtures will be installed and merchandise will begin arriving. It's scheduled to be complete by the last weekend of May.

"We're all about Downtown and we love the Landing. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the store will be ready to open in time for the jazz festival," said Hand.
