Developer Stephen Atkins confirmed Friday that Marriott International Inc. has approved a franchise for the Laura Trio project Downtown.

Atkins said the next step is to submit a proposal to the city.

“We’re looking at this as a public-private partnership,” he said.

Asked if the request will be in the form of a Historic Preservation Trust Fund grant, tax incentives or some other form of government support, Atkins said the proposal will not be for any specific amount of money from any specific source.

In April, a $3 million mortgage was recorded for the Laura Trio and the former Barnett Bank Building from Stache Investments Corp., Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan’s venture capital firm.

In July, the Downtown Investment Authority voted to let the city Office of Economic Development negotiate terms of any incentives for the Laura Trio and Barnett Bank building redevelopment.

“We’re negotiating with them about what they think is an appropriate contribution to the project,” he said.
