Hemming Plaza has received a facelift, in the form of new landscaping, in preparation for the April 9-13 One Spark crowdfunding festival.

On March 22, about 100 volunteers coordinated by Greenscape of Jacksonville, the Late Bloomers Garden and Downtown Vision descended on the square block at the front door of City Hall to install new foliage and blooming plants.

“We cleaned it up and greened it up,” said Greenscape Executive Director Anna Dooley.

The timing for the project was arranged to dress up the plaza in time for more than 100,000 visitors to Downtown anticipated during the festival.

One of the varieties of blooming plants installed in what Dooley called “drift roses.” She said the plants bloom, then shed their blooms, then bloom again all season.

While it’s impossible to accurately predict the whims of nature, “They might all be in bloom during One Spark,” she said.
