City notes: Skyway hours extended for New Year\'s Eve and TaxSlayer Bowl

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority is extending Skyway hours for New Year’s Eve and the TaxSlayer Bowl.

The Downtown people-mover will run from 6 a.m. Thursday until 2 a.m. Friday and re-open at 10 a.m. Friday and close at midnight, all for New Year’s Eve-related activities.

For the TaxSlayer Bowl, the system will open at 9 a.m. Saturday and close at midnight.

Trains will depart every six to eight minutes.

Additionally, parking lots around the Prime Osborn Convention Center station at 1071 W. Bay St. will be open for free parking after 5 p.m. Thursday and all day Friday.

Alstaedt performing at first Masterworks concert of 2016

The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Courtney Lewis, will host guest artist Nicolas Alstaedt for the first Florida Blue Masterworks Series concert of 2016.

Alstaedt will play the cello in Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A Minor, Op. 129.

The shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 7 and 8 p.m. Jan. 8 and 9.

Lewis will host “Insight,” a question-and-answer session about the performance, an hour before each show at Jacoby Symphony Hall at the Times-Union Center for Performing Arts.

Tickets range from $25 to $74. The symphony’s Under18Free program that allows adults who purchase a ticket to receive one complimentary ticket for children ages 7 to 17 if available.

JTA schedules Moncrief/Myrtle public charrette

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority invites the public to participate in redesigning and improving mobility through a series of design charrettes focused on Moncrief Road, Myrtle Avenue and the Eighth Street corridors.

The focus is on bicycle and pedestrian safety, mobility improvements and other concerns.

The project could include sidewalks, bike paths, transit-access improvements, lighting, landscaping and bus shelters.

The meetings will be at the Emmett Reed Center at 1093 W. Sixth St.

The schedule is:

• 4 to 8 p.m. Jan. 12 for a community open house

• 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 13 and 14 for community feedback and planning.

• 5 to 7:30 p.m. for a wrap-up presentation

Tiger Bay welcomes head of Florida’s elections supervisors in January

The First Coast Tiger Bay Club will next meet Jan. 15 at The University Club with featured speaker Chris Chambless, president-elect of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections.

Chambless will talk about trends involving the professionalization of voting administration and the shift from an era of few protocols to one emphasizing certification and professional standards.

Cost for the event is $25, which includes a buffet lunch.

Roosevelt Collier kicks off Chapel Concert series at Beaches

The Beaches Museum & History Park will launch its next Chapel Concert series Jan. 11 with a performance by Miami native Roosevelt “The Dr.” Collier and his pedal steel guitar.

Collier originally performed with the Lee Boys, a six-member sacred-steel group of family members. He moved on to solo performances and has shared the stage with Rolling Stones saxophonist Karl Denson, Umphrey’s McGee, Perpetual Groove and the Allman Brothers Band.

The performance starts at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 day of the show. They can be purchased at the Beaches Museum or at beachesmuseum.org. A package of all five series concerts is available for $80.
