Fernandina Beach city manager resigning: Joe Gerrity, Fernandina Beach city manager, announced he will be resigning from his position. He is set to stay until Oct. 2 two get the city through the 2015-16 budget approval process and to complete department head appraisals.

NEFBA’s Government Affairs Committee: The next Government Affairs meeting will be Thursday, July 23, at 8:30 a.m. The meeting will take place at the NEFBA offices, 103 Century 21 Drive, Suite 100.
New City Council leadership: At Large, Group 4 Council member Greg Anderson was elected by his peers to be council president. His term began July 1 and runs through June 30. District 5 council member Lori Boyer was elected vice president.
Pension reform passes: The Jacksonville City Council passed a pension reform agreement that looks to address Jacksonville’s biggest financial challenge. The plan, which passed 14-4, also was approved by the Police and Fire Pension Fund. Mayor Alvin Brown signed it into law June 19. The law will likely face legal challenges. The plan commits the city to paying an additional $350 million over the next 13 years to address the $1.7 billon unfunded liability. Officials say it will save taxpayers $1.2 billion over 30 years.

Commissioners debate capital funds: After another round of debate at a recent County Commission meeting, the board voted 4-0 to schedule a special meeting to discuss the use of capital funds. The meeting is expected to focus on parks, but also will include such things as libraries, the Clay County fairgrounds, transportation and road-paving projects. The meeting is expected to take place in July.

Potential sales tax increase: The St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners has hosted two public hearings to consider ballot language that would give voters the opportunity to vote on a sales tax. On June 16, the commissioners with a 3-2 vote decided to not place the 1-cent sales tax on the November 2016 ballot. However, the St. Johns Couty School Board is now pursuing a half-cent sales tax for school funding. The tax would need to be approved by the commissioners before being allowed on the 2016 ballot.
