Wow! Build a home from foundation to roof — and everything between — in 24 hours.
It might have been a daunting task, but certainly one the NEFBA-HabiJax team was up to.
In the course of two 12-hour days Oct. 14 and Oct. 15, volunteers worked from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to build a home in one of Jacksonville’s urban core neighborhoods, New Town.
Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville, or HabiJax, and NEFBA partnered to build at home at 1439 Windle St., in a neighborhood where other HabiJax homes already exist.
NEFBA President Rick Morales selected the HabiJax 24-hour build as the President’s Project during his term in office. The two previous NEFBA presidents, Daniel Blanchard (2014) and Dennis Ginder (2015), chose a HabiJax project as well.
“HabiJax’s goal to have a positive impact on the community is a compelling reason to partner with them when we have the opportunity,” Morales said. “I was particularly intrigued by the challenge to build a house in 24 hours.”
More than 30 organizations contributed funds, materials or volunteer hours to the 24-hour house, totaling $93,000.
“We are grateful for all of our volunteers and for the many in-kind donations provided by companies and individuals throughout Jacksonville who contribute to the success of projects like these,” said Mary Kay O’Rourke, HabiJax’s CEO and president. “NEFBA has been great to partner with and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
