Salvation Army receives Walmart grant

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation awarded more than $1.1 million in grants to 26 nonprofits in Florida for hunger relief, healthy eating and career opportunity.

The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida received $25,000 for hunger relief for low-income families.

The State Giving Program in the past year donated more than $78 million in cash and in-kind contributions to charities in Florida, part of the $1.42 billion total given by Walmart and the foundation.

In October 2014, the retailer and its foundation announced a commitment to enhance sustainability of the food system. That includes a goal to provide four billion meals by 2020.

During the past year, Walmart donated nearly 41 million pounds of food to food banks in Florida, equal to more than 34 million meals.

Associates also volunteered more than 93,000 hours with Florida nonprofits through the Volunteerism Always Pays program.

Duval Motor Co. helps feed the hungry

In honor of Duval Motor Co.’s 100-year anniversary, the locally owned company collected more than 850 pounds of food to help feed more than 800 people.

Food drives at each of the six dealerships in Jacksonville and Gainesville had a goal of collecting more than 100 pounds of food from customers and employees.

The 675 pounds collected in Jacksonville was donated to Feeding Northeast Florida, whose mission is to establish food security across the region.

In Gainesville, more than 175 pounds of collected food was donated to Bread of the Mighty Food Bank.

“The company annually invests more than $750,000 into the communities in which we work and we provide our employees and customers opportunities to contribute as well,” said David Hodges, president and CEO of Duval Motor Co.

The company also raised more than $50,000 for its “Tip’s Trotters” walk team in support of the Walk to Defeat ALS, one of the largest fund-raising amounts for the organization.

Golf for Autism tourney June 10

Dust off your golf clubs and register for Golf for Autism presented by Delegal Law Offices benefitting The Jericho School for Children with Autism.

This year’s tournament will be June 10 at the Blue Sky Golf Club (formerly Mill Cove).

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and an 18-hole, four-person best ball tournament will follow the 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Applied behavioral analysis has been endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General as the most effective treatment for children with autism.
