K9s for Warriors approved to build veterinary clinic

St. Johns County issued a building permit April 24 for the K9s for Warriors campus in Ponte Vedra.

Jacksonville-based Auld & White Constructors is the contractor for the 4,284-square-foot veterinary facility at a project cost of $2.1 million.

It is planned at 70 Warrior Way between U.S. 1 and Nocatee Parkway. Site plans show 23 parking spaces.

The St. Johns River Water Management District issued an environmental resources permit Nov. 13.

K9s for Warriors is planning to add a 4,300-square-foot military veterinarian clinic for its service dogs at 70 Warrior Way between U.S. 1 and Nocatee Parkway in Ponte Vedra.

Hollywood, Florida-based NV5, which has an office in Jacksonville, is the civil engineer. Walker Architects of Gainesville is the architect.

The clinic was originally permitted in May 2023, but the permit expired.

K9s for Warriors, through K9s for Warriors Inc., owns the land.

According to k9sforwarriors.org, Shari Duval founded K9s for Warriors in 2011 to train and pair service dogs with veterans who have military-related trauma. Her son, Brett, was a civilian K9 bomb dog handler who returned from Iraq with post-traumatic stress disorder.

According to the website, K9s for Warriors has paired 1,000 veterans with service dogs.

K9s for Warriors is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In addition to its Ponte Vedra location, it operates two facilities in San Antonio, Texas.
