Eight years after becoming an option for diners looking for a melty sandwich in Downtown Jacksonville, The Happy Grilled Cheese is closing.

The establishment, which began as a food truck before moving into a storefront at 219 N. Hogan St., announced on Facebook Aug. 5 that it would cease operations after service Aug. 8.

The post said that after a temporary closure, the space would reopen with a new breakfast and lunch concept.

“This pivot has been a gut-wrenching decision, as it is hard breaking up HGC’s 13.5yr love affair with the city of Jax, FL,” the post read. “The good news is that you’ve got the rest of this week to come have lunch with us downtown.”

The Happy Grilled Cheese’s menu includes classic versions of the grilled cheese sandwich along with variations with such additions as avocado, pulled pork, steak and spicy chicken.

It also offers sides and soups, plus versions of a patty melt, Cuban sandwich, Reuben and spicy chicken sandwich.

Founder Anthony Hashem branched into the storefront in 2017. In 2019, the operators announced they would establish a second location in Mandarin at 9965 San Jose Blvd. in the Merchants Walk shopping center.

In August, the restaurant announced that the Mandarin location was closing.

The brand also owns Yellow Rose BBQ that opened this year at 9965 San Jose Blvd., Unit 48.
