A former Winn-Dixie in the St. Johns Commons shopping center can now be converted into an Aldi.
St. Johns County issued a $1.75 million permit Aug. 13 to build-out a 24,278-square-foot Aldi in the former Winn-Dixie space at 2220-200 County Road 210 W.
The Winn-Dixie closed Aug. 10, but its neighboring liquor store remains open.
The Aldi will be about half the size of the Winn-Dixie. Ash Properties, the owner of St. Johns Commons, shows the Winn-Dixie at 45,802 square feet on its website.
Johns Creek, Georgia-based WH Bass is the project contractor.
In March 2024, Aldi acquired Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers Inc., which operated about 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The grocer has been converting many of those to Aldi stores.
The St. Johns County store is among 13 Northeast Florida locations slated for conversion.
So far, two have opened, with another scheduled to open later this month.
Aldi Regional Vice President Matt Thon stated in an emailed statement on Aug. 6 that the company plans four more openings by early 2026.
Before the acquisition, Aldi had 13 stores in the area: eight in Duval County; one in Nassau County (Yulee); two in Saint Johns County (St. Augustine and Saint Johns); and two in Clay County (Middleburg and Orange Park). The first Northeast Florida Aldi opened in October 2014 in St. Augustine.
The U.S. headquarters for Germany-based Aldi is in Batavia, Illinois.
