Fourth Dollar General planned in Macclenny

Discount retailer Dollar General is planning its fourth store in Macclenny.

The St. Johns River Water Management District issued an environmental resource permit Aug. 15 for the project. The store is planned on an undeveloped lot at County Road 23C and Florida 121, according to the application, with construction expected to begin by Sept. 30.

According to the 2020 census, Macclenny has a population 7,304 vs. 6,374 in 2010.

A 10,650-square-foot Dollar General is planned in Macclenny.

Site plans show a 10,650-square-foot building with 54 parking spaces. Thomasville, Georgia-based Teramore Development LLC is the property owner. Tidewater Engineering of St. Simons Island, Georgia, is the civil engineer.

There are Macclenny Dollar Generals at 9557 Florida 121, 11750 N. Sixth St. and 1263 S. Sixth St. There is fourth in neighboring Glen St. Mary at 6953 Mt. Vernon St.

Data website scrapehero.com reports Dollar General operates 20,480 stores in 48 states and territories as of July 18. According to dollargeneral.com, the first Dollar General opened June 1, 1955, in Springfield, Kentucky, with no item costing more than $1.

The chain does not franchise and is publicly traded. Its stores are operated by Dolgencorp LLC, a subsidiary of Dollar General Corp., which is based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Dolgencorp also produces Dollar General-branded products.

In a March 13 investor relations report, Dollar General Corp. said it began reviewing its store portfolio in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024 to evaluate closures and rebranding. The review was based on individual store performance, expected future performance and operating conditions.

As a result, the company said plans to close 96 Dollar General stores and 45 pOpshelf stores, while converting six pOpshelf locations to Dollar General stores in the first quarter of the fiscal year ending Jan. 30, 2026.
