Amelia Island Harris Teeter approved for wine bar

It is the North Carolina-based chain’s only remaining store in Florida.

The Nassau County Planning and Zoning Board unanimously approved a conditional use permit June 17 for Harris Teeter to open a wine bar in its Amelia Island grocery store.

Ale & Vine, will be inside the store at 4800 First Coast Highway in the Shops at Amelia Market, about a mile northwest of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Liquor will not be served.

The wine bar does not have a dedicated food menu, but customers can bring in food from the store’s hot bar and deli.

It is the only Harris Teeter store in Florida. 

According to its application, the grocery chain operates wine bars at 27 of its 274 locations. It says the store was approved for off-site liquor sales in 2003 and is open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Harris Teeter LLC is listed as the owner through Atlanta-based JHH Amelia Market LLC. The law firm GrayRobinson P.A. is listed as the agent.

Harris Teeter is in The Shops at Amelia Market at 4800 First Coast Highway in Fernandina Beach.

Harris Teeter, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co., was co-founded in 1960 by North Carolina grocers W.T. Harris and Willis Teeter, according to its website. It is headquartered in Matthews, North Carolina, and employs about 35,000 people.

In addition to its retail stores, the company operates grocery, frozen food and perishable distribution centers in Greensboro and Indian Trail, South Carolina.

Harris Teeter previously operated stores in Jacksonville’s Mandarin neighborhood and in Ponte Vedra Beach. The stores closed in 2004 and 2006, respectively.

According to scraphero.com, the chain has the highest concentration of stores in North Carolina, with 158 locations.
